The Apistogramma cactoides is a vibrant and striking freshwater dwarf cichlid native to the rivers and streams of South America. It features vivid orange and blue coloration with intricate patterning on its body, making it a captivating addition to any aquarium.
Appearance: Adult males typically display brighter colors and more elaborate patterns than females. The fish has a compact, elongated body and distinctive fins.
Habitat: Naturally found in rainforested waters with dense vegetation, substrate, and submerged roots.
Care Requirements:
- Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons to provide ample space.
- Water Parameters: Soft, slightly acidic water with a pH of 5.5-6.5; temperature between 75-82°F (24-28°C).
- Diet: Omnivorous; prefers high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
- Tank Setup: Rich in plants, hiding spots, and subdued lighting to mimic their natural habitat.
- Behaviour: Generally peaceful but can become territorial during breeding. Best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish.
